Gladiators 2008

Contenders enter the arena to demonstrate their strength, skill, speed and stamina throughout a host of challenges against the formidable Gladiators.

Gladiators is an Australian television series which aired on Saturday nights on the Seven Network from 1995 until 1996 almost consecutively for eighteen months. It was based on the popular franchise which started with American Gladiators in 1989. However the Australian show was more heavily based on the UK version with events, format and even music being used from the British show. It was revived in 2008. The premise of the show involves permanent competitors called "Gladiators" being put up against one-time-only "Challengers" in several different events which tests both physical and mental capabilities. In a typical episode, two men and two women compete for points against the Gladiators across four different events, with separate events for males and females. After this, each pair then competes against each other in The Eliminator, an obstacle course, of which any points they have won previously go towards time for a head start on their opponent. The winner of this is dubbed the champion of the episode. The episode champions then compete in the finals series. All three series of the show was filmed at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in 1995, and was hosted by Kimberley Joseph and Aaron Pedersen, with Mike Hammond replacing Pedersen after the first series. The show was refereed by John Alexander in the first series, and Mike Whitney thereafter. John Forsythe served as assistant referee.

Gladiators is a sports entertainment television show that was an international success during the 1990s and early 2000s with shows being filmed in America, Finland, The United Kingdom, Australia, South Africa, Sweden, Nigeria and Denmark. Russia, Germany, The Bahamas and Japan would also compete in international shows during the series. After a lengthy break, Gladiators was revived in 2008 in the UK, the US, and Australia, in 2009 Saudi Arabia created their own series featuring competitors from all over the Arab region and most recently Sweden has brought back their version which is proving more successful than any other revival. The concept of the show is that athletic members of the public battle against the show's own Gladiators to claim points in several events that require speed, strength and skill. In the final event of the show, "The Eliminator" the contenders race against each other, with the first to finish winning the episode and moving onto the next round. A children's derivative of the concept was also made in the US, called Gladiators 2000. A UK variant of this was aired starting in 1995, called Gladiators: Train 2 Win.

Behind the scenes, highly respected military fitness expert 'Chief' Brabon was responsible for preparing the gladiators for their extremely physical roles. The revival of Gladiators was first announced on 9 September 2007, and premiered on 30 March 2008 at 6:30 pm. The Challengers in this series competed to win A$50,000 and a new Subaru Forester. American Gladiators

American Gladiators is an American competition television program that aired weekly in syndication from September 1989 to May 1996. The series matched a cast of amateur athletes against each other, as well as against the show's own gladiators, in contests of strength and agility. The concept was created by Dan Carr and John C. Ferraro, who held the original competition at Erie Tech High School in Erie, Pennsylvania. They sold the show to The Samuel Goldwyn Company where the concept was enhanced and became American Gladiators. An effort in 2004 to launch a live American Gladiators show on the Las Vegas Strip became mired in a securities fraud prosecution. However, the television series was restarted in 2008. Episodes from the original series were played on ESPN Classic from 2007 to 2009. Several episodes are available for download on Apple's iTunes Service.

Gladiators 2000

Gladiators 2000 is a spin-off television show of American Gladiators. It is hosted by Ryan Seacrest and Maria Sansone. Season 5 American Gladiators grand champion Peggy Odita served as head referee. It premiered on September 17, 1994 and ran until May 11, 1996. It was often partnered with its parent show in syndication, however some markets ran it independently. Like AG, the series was produced by Four Point Entertainment, and distributed by Samuel Goldwyn Television. In response to the popularity of NBC's 2008 revival of American Gladiators, the show was brought back in syndicated reruns for the 2008-2009 television season, being eligible for the FCC's "E/I" requirements. In Gladiators 2000, two teams of two child competitors would team up with two Gladiators as coaches and compete by running through a series of events, and answering questions on various subjects along the way. While some props and sets were retained, the rules for each event were drastically altered. A British version of this show was developed, known as Gladiators: Train 2 Win.

MTN Gladiators

MTN Gladiators was a game show produced by MTN for SABC3 in South Africa from 1999 to 2001. Following South Africa's initial participation in the second International Gladiators and Springbok Challenge YouTube tournaments in Birmingham, England, the format developed a cult following in South Africa. In 1998 production finally began for a domestic series, eventually airing in 1999. The show pitted contestants in a variety of physical events against the 'Gladiators', who would attempt to prevent them from achieving maximum points on a variety of games. After this, the two contenders would race each other on the Eliminator, an assault course containing climbing, balancing, and cargo nets. The contender with the most points received a half second head start for every 1 point they were in front by. The show was originally presented by Glenn Hicks - executive producer of the first four series - and Ursula Staplefeldt. Following Glenn's departure from the show in 2000, he was replaced by James Lennox when it was resurrected for its penultimate fifth series in 2001. The referees were legendary South African cricketer Cyril Mitchley and international strongman Wayne "The Boss" Price. The timekeepers over the show's run were Ingrid Chantler, and female Gladiator ICE - unable to compete due to pregnancy. The Gladiators and crowds alike were cheered on by a group of cheerleaders, known as G-Force.

Gladiators Australian Series 1

The first series of Australian Gladiators began airing on Channel 7 on 29 April 1995 following successful versions of the Gladiators format in America, the UK and Finland. The series closely resembled the UK series albeit with just four events and the Eliminator. Fifteen episodes were filmed in a progressive competition at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre between 24 March and 2 April. Kimberley Joseph and Aaron Pedersen presented the show whilst play by play commentary was by Tony Schibeci. John Alexander acted as referee and John Forsyth as assistant referee. The Kix cheerleaders performed in the background of the events. Winners of the heats received a Sony music system and a selection of CD's valued to $2,000. The runners up received a set of gym apparatus. The winners of the final won a car.

Gladiators Australian Series 3

The third series of Australian Gladiators began airing on Channel 7 on 4 May 1996, the week after the last episode from series 2 aired. Twenty four episodes were filmed at the Brisbane Entertainment Centre in December 1995 including three three-part specials. A further three episodes were filmed in Birmingham in the summer of 1996 as part of a second Ashes series. An episode filmed in the UK featuring Australian challengers was also shown. The series was once again presented by Kimberley Joseph and Mike Hammond with Tony Schibeci as commentator, Mike Whitney as referee, John Forsyth as assistant referee and the Kix cheerleaders performed in the background of the events. Forsyth would act as the Australian referee in the second Ashes series. Forsyth also acted as referee in some of the Quarter Finals after Mike Whitney caught a virus, and Forsyth's position as assistant referee was taken over by Neil Waldron during some of the Quarter Finals because of this. The third series suffered a slight decline in viewing figures and due to an increase in costs, production on the fourth series was halted. A new series would not air until 2008.

International Gladiators 2

International Gladiators 2 was filmed in the National Indoor Arena in Birmingham during 1995 and was broadcast on ITV in 1996, the second series of Gladiators using the International moniker. Six countries were represented: the United States, the United Kingdom, Australia, Germany, Russia, and South Africa; this was two more than were represented in the first International series. UK, USA and Australia all had their own domestic series and sent recent champion contenders and selected gladiators. The other three countries did not have their own shows at the time although this was not indicated at the time of filming. Finland did not send representatives, either contenders or Gladiators, as they had in the first series. There were also thirty-six Gladiators, twelve more than the original series. American Gladiators host Mike Adamle returned as host. Gladiators presenter John Fashanu did not return for the second series and was replaced by his co-host, Ulrika Jonsson. Australian Gladiators presenter Kimberley Joseph joined the broadcast team as well. Gladiators referee John Anderson and American Gladiators referee Larry Thompson also returned, and were joined by Aussie assistant referee John Forsyth.
